Day 9 & 10 Chest & Back...and Plyo the beast!

Workout: Chest & Back Ab Ripper X

Duration: about 55 mins

Calories Burned: 673 calories according to the Fitness Activity Calculator website I use under the circuit training numbers.

Well, yesterday as promised I was right back at it pounding out Chest & Back. This workout felt great and I beat most of my numbers on my sets by 1 or 2 reps so I was totally pumped.

Workout: Plyometrics

Duration: 58mins total

Calories Burned: 759 under high impact aerobics on the same site as above.

Man, I was much better at Plyo this week than last! It was still a killer though! I was sweating like crazy, and my legs were limp noodles afterwards, but I got through it after a few interuptions from Alex for juice and "Dad, can I play on the computer?"...."Sure"...."But I need you to set it up!"..."arrrgghhh, hold on".... I'm sure you get the picture....

So far I am feeling awesome about staring P90X again...I am totally committed too not only finishing it but using it as my main workout for life....there is just so much variety in this program that you can't get bored of it.....I LOVE IT!

On a lighter note, I just bought a Sony Ericsson W810i! cell phone...this is an absolutely amazing phone that has gotten rave reviews on Amazon, Cnet, Moblie Review and a number of other websites...the absolutely best website for reviews and info on this phone is Mobile-review.com ....I ordered it, so it should be here next week sometime and I can't wait...the wife and kids won't see me I'll be figuring out how to use it and once I do, I'll be listening to music, taking pics, or video, playing games, surfing the net...etc etc right from my cell phone....can you tell I'm EXCITED!!!

Tomorrow is Shoulders & Arms, and I can't wait I'm gonna bring it big time and kick some ass...Cheers!!!!!!!!!

Day 8 Rest...

Well, yesterday I decided to take a complete rest day. Reason for that is I had worked out for 7 days straight and I felt my body needed it. Also 4 days ago I also did a Chest workout with a buddy of mine, which I was still feeling yesterday and since its P90X Chest & Back for my next workout I decided to rest so that I am fully ready to go...which will be today...

Workout: Rest

Calories burned: oh about 2000 throughout the day

Calories Ingested: oh probably too many

Workout for today: P90X Chest & Back + Ab Ripper X...BRING IT BABY!!!!

Day 7 Rest..TJ Cardio Party/Great Abs Guaranteed

P90X Day 7 Week 1 Rest or X Stretch

Workout: Turbo Jam Cardio Party 1/Great Abs Guaranteed

Duration: Approx 55mins

Calorie Burn:506 Approx...probably more if you add in the Abs...and I only calculate for the acutal working part of the workout not the warm up or cool down.

Well today is Day 7 of P90X and I was supposed to rest or do X Stretch...but I am so PUMPED UP that I just had to do something harder so I chose the TJ workout and man I left a pool of sweat on the basement floor lol....Also Great Abs was tough! My abs were on fire and now they are fatigued as heck...I would almost go as far as saying it is almost as tough as Ab Ripper X! Ok it's only 7 mins....but man I couldn't get through it without taking many MANY breaks....oh my midsection sucks...love handles, flab blahhhhh arrrrrgghhhhhhh....sorry just venting...I'll keep working at it though....

I am sure I'll pay tomorrow, during Chest & Back, for working out today but that's ok becasue "the only easy day was yesterday!" (Navy Seals BUDS Motto)...

Week 2 coming up tomorrow, I didn't go 100% this week (but damn close lol) so week 2 is now dubbed "Push Til Ya Puke" week...LOL...we'll see how gung ho I am after plyo!!!

That's it for today, gotta work tonight back at 11:30pm when I may do X Stretch then depending on how I feel...Cheers

Day 6 Kenpo X...What a sweat!

P90X Week 1 Day 6

Wokout: Kenpo X

Duration: 58 mins (warmup/cooldown incl)41 mins of high impact cardio kickboxing

Calories Burned: 600 (if you just count the acutal working part of the dvd)

Quote: "aging?...I don't believe in aging!...I got your aging right here!" Tony Horton

Well, I have to say I LOVE KENPO X, what an awesome sweat inducing workout! Last year from Sept-Dec I was using Turbo Jam and weightlifting to prepare for a fitness test and man did the TJ tapes ever pay off for Kenpo X. I remember 2 years ago when I first started P90X, I was so uncoordinated in Kenpo X, I couldn't put star blocks together if you paid me LOL!

Today though no problems, form was good, intensity was outstanding...Ok ok, when the star blocks got faster it basically looked like my arms were flailing about lol, but I still did them!

Ok last night I never did Ab Ripper X so I am going to do it today sometime, I can still feel my abs from the first two session of ARX.

Hey I just realized today is the end of Week 1...tomorrow is rest day...OUTSTANDING! I will definitely be doing X Stretch though as my whole body is sore and I think that will help me not feel so stiff....

Oh, by the way in comparison Kenpo X to Turbo Jam, I would say TJ's Punch, Kick, Jam and Cardio Party 3 are at about the same level as Kenpo X. I haven't done all the TJ workouts available but I have those along with everything in the basic set...In fact as far as getting your HR up I think TJ's Punch, Kich, Jam might acutally be a little harder than Kenpo X....AHHHHHHH blasphemy all you X disciples are saying, but seriously just try it and you'll see what I mean....

I may just supplemnet Kenpo once in a while with PKJ or CP3....just to keep things interesting and not to get bored.

Well todays workout really put me in a great mood, I have to work evenings tonight so got a get ready. Have a great day everyone.

Day 5 Legs & Back

Well, I am wiped after this workout. Man, your leg muscles and back muscles are such large groups that this one absolutely kills me. I was pretty shaky when I was done, but man I was proud to get through it.

Some of those leg sets are killer....wall squats with one leg lifted just kill me lol. I know I'll improve, just have to keep plugging away one day at a time.

Hey you want to see what P90X can do for you?...search for P90X on Youtube.com...and you should see a video with X graduate and afficando Perry Tinsley he does a core test exercise to show you how effective this program is in developing your core muscles...basically it is 3 or 4 mins in the plank position...but there's a catch...after the first 30 seconds in regular plank he lifts one arm off the floor for 15 seconds....then changes and lifts the other...then does one foot, then the other, then one arm, one foot...so now is holding the plank position on one forearm and the opposite foot...then amazingly switches to the other arm and foot lifted then finishes off with another 30 secs of normal plank position....hey why explain it here is the link see for yourself.

Perry Tinsley Core Test!

Looking forward to Kenpo tomorrow.

Day 4 Yoga X

Wow, yesterdays Yoga X was once again an eye opener...Some of those postures that require you to lean, twis and balance at the same time are freak'n hard. Man this is one long workout at 90mins....It is not hard Cardio wise, but I was still working up a sweat doing it!

I really liked Yoga Belly 7 during this workout which is basically a short abs workout near the end. It's short in time but my abs were still screaming. I can really see Yoga improving my balance, flexibility, and concentration over time and I am really looking forward to next weeks Yoga workout.

Yesterday was one of my best friends 40th birthday so we all went out to this great Chinese restaurant downtown. Yes I guess I blew my diet out of the water, but hey it's his 40th and demands celebration with lots of eating and drinking. It's funny because I am only two and a half years away from my 40th and I wanna be in the best shape of my life when I turn 40. Although I know that by following P90X for the rest of my life (or at least until I am too frail to do it lol) that will be no problem.

Today is my son Alex's 5th birthday party (stay away from cake, stay away from cake) so I am slated to do Legs & Back which I will do after the party around 5pm then probably post how I felt later on tonight.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Day 3 Shoulders & Arms...

Well, yesterday was shoulders and arms day P90X style. Of course like most guys I really look forward to my arm workouts, as my arms get really pumped up! As you can imagine I was pumped for this workout.

Traditionally when working shoulders, arms or any other resistance training I go as heavy with the weight as I can so that I fail between 8-10 reps on every set. I also superset biceps/triceps; that is I do a bicep set followed immediately by a tricep set then rest for about 90 seconds. P90X resistance workouts are very much like circuit training...well really it is circuit training using resistance to 1. Work the muscle group...and multiple muscle groups and little rest in between sets to 2. Get your HR up and keep it there.

So the workout started out with alternating shoulder presses. On a traditional workout after a warmup I'll start with around 60lb db's usually for 8-10 then drop the weight during future sets in order to keep that 8-10 range. With this workout I decided to start at 45lbs knowing I was immediately going into a bicep set...The thing with alternating shoulder press is that I find it harder than traditional shoulder presses as you have to use your Core muscles to hold your body straight, especially if you perfrom the set standing up. So I actually stuggled to get 10 reps (which is a good thing). Then the workout goes into a bicep set, tricep set back to shoulders, biceps, triceps and follows that pattern throughout the whole workout...there are 30 second water breaks after performing two rounds of a shoulder, bi, tri circuit. Other than that not much rest in between, so I definitely was feeling it throughout this workout. Taking my HR manually I figured it never went below 150bpm and at times was as high as 180bpm..Yikes! At 59mins for the entire workout (inlc warmup and cooldown) this is a long one, but man what an arm/shoulder burn at the end. Today my biceps are sore even though I went lighter on all bicep sets, shoulders/tris aren't too bad, but my traps are sore as heck!

Well todays workout is Yoga X which I will do in the early afternoon. Yoga X is 90mins long and is not easy especially if you're new to Yoga....some of those postures kill me becasue my flexibility and balance sucks but I am sure it will improve.

Day 2 Plyometrics...the "BEAST"!

Well, there is good reason why they call this workout the beast! It is 58mins (incl warmup and cooldown) of jumping, and explosive leg movements which absolutely make your legs and your heart scream! This is one tough workout and in my opinion is the toughest of all the P90X workouts.

Since it was the first time doing this in 2 years I made sure I went hard but not so hard that I wanted to throw up. It was tough and I was drenched in sweat at the end but I made it through the whole thing!

As far as how I feel from yesterday Chest and Back, my upper lats especially on the sides are sore as heck and my abs are on fire from Ab Ripper X....ahhh I forgot how great this program is...It's one of the few in my opinion that make you feel like you really worked out at the end.

I believe tomorrows workout is Shoulders & Arms and I'm really looking forward to it...so bring it!

Day 1 Chest & Back...Oh my I forgot how hard this was!

Well, today was Day 1 Chest and Back and man did I forget how hard this workout was! It took me almost 30 mins after the workout to stop feeling like I was gonna puke and I was still shaky and hour afterwards. I even told myself I was gonna take it easy this week as I knew from past experience how hard it is...AND IT WAS STILL HARD!As I mentioned above this is not your average workout program people, if you can't get in shape with this then I don't know what will get you in shape!

To give you all a little history I purchased P90X in March 2005 and was on it for 6 weeks, I lost 11lbs in that time but more importantly I could run, jump, doing everything easier and faster. Even in teamsports my teamates noticed that something was different about me. I was faster, (thanks Plyo!) stronger (thanks all you resistance workouts!) and I could maintain my fast pace longer (thanks Plyo again, Kenpo and Cardio X). Then I got satisfied where I was at and just QUIT! Yep you heard it right, I quit, by missing a few workouts, then doing some then slowly tapering off to doing nothing.

So today is Day 1 again and I thought I would keep a blog of my journey as I really do want to be in shape for the rest of my life, for my kids, for my wife and for me!

As you may have guessed (lol) this is a hard, intense program and I guarantee if you follow this program for the full 90 days you'll be in the best shape of your life! P90X consists of 12 workouts that vary from resistance training, cardio, stretching and yoga. These workouts are hard so I don't recommend it you are just starting out down the road to fitness. Some of the resistance workouts are Chest & Back, Shoulder & Arms, Legs & Back, Chest, Shoulder & Triceps, and Back & Biceps. The cardio workouts are Plyometrics (this one is the mother of all workouts!), Kenpo, Cardio X. The stretch workouts are X Stretch and Yoga X. Core workouts are Core Synergistics and Ab Ripper X.
There are a number of ways you can do the workouts. Follow the standard way, which emphasises resistance training. The Lean Version which emphasises Cardio or the Doubles version, which is like the standard but adds an extra cardio session. The beauty and effectiveness of this program is because you are always doing something different, everyday! One day resistance along with Ab Ripper, the next day Plyometrics, followed by Yoga. The choices are endless, well not endless but there is great variety. So follow along with this blog, I plan to post my workouts everyday, how I felt, the pain, the joy and the results! BRING IT!
